Pineapple Propagation – How To Grow Ananas Comosus

The only plant with edible fruit from the bromeliad family is the pineapple. And this plant is widely used for growing in indoor conditions because it has a spectacular appearance.

This genus was first described by the European botanist, and it happened back in 1735. The name – Ananas Comosus, comes from the local name of the plant, but it was slightly distorted. It comes from Paraguay, Colombia, Brazil, and Venezuela.

There are 8 different species that can be found in the wild, and almost half of them are grown in greenhouses.

Room Pineapple Care and Propagation

Often in room conditions grow only 2 species. These are such as pineapple crested (Ananas Comosus) and Pineapple Bracts (Ananas Bracteatus). In natural conditions, these plants can reach a height of 100 centimeters, and in diameter ― all 200 centimeters.

Grown indoors, the pineapple doesn’t grow as big. So, if it is provided with good care, it can grow only up to 70 centimeters in height.

Temperature regime

Loves the heat, so in winter and summer in the room where the pineapple should not be colder than 16-17 degrees. The plant will grow and develop best if the temperature on the windowsill (where it is located) is maintained year-round at 22-25 degrees.

Loves the light, because it is necessary to choose a well-lit place. In autumn and winter, experts recommend organizing the illumination of the plant. To do this, use fluorescent lamps, and the backlight should last about 8-10 hours.

How to water

In summer, watering should be abundant, but it should be borne in mind that watering should be carried out only when the soil is completely dry. For irrigation uses lukewarm water (30-35 degrees), defended for at least 1 day. From the last autumn weeks to the end of the winter period, watering should be greatly reduced, as at this time the plant lacks a very small amount of water.

And in the warm season, the plant needs regular spraying and from time to time it needs a warm shower.

Soil Mix

Suitable acidic (pH 4.0-5.0) and loose soil. Suitable soil mixture consists of hummus, turf, coarse sand, and chopped peat, which should be taken in a ratio of 2:3:1:3. The substrate should be permeable and loose. For pineapple suited a wide and low flower pot because his roots are close to the surface soil.

It is necessary to feed in spring and summer, 1 time in 2 weeks. For this purpose, nitrogen fertilizer is suitable, or rather, purchased organic fertilizer or infusion of mullein.

Features of transplantation

It is necessary to transplant pineapple only in case of emergency, namely when the root system will no longer fit in the pot. And without the apparent need to disturb the plant should not be.

Methods of reproduction

Can be propagated by rooting the tip of the ripe fruit or separating the root sockets. The top (Sultan) is carefully cut out, wait until it dries a little, and then planted for rooting. Rooting will be faster (after 2-4 weeks), if the container with the top is placed in a warm place, it is also necessary to be regularly moistened. Still, experts advise, from above to cover a plant with a cap from a polyethylene bag or a glass jar.

As a rule, pineapple bloom is observed from May to July, but sometimes it can begin to bloom in December. Bloom can only adult plants that are 3-4 years old. The nozzle is quite compact and similar to the bump. Fruit maturation occurs after 4 or 5 months.

On top of the fruit formed a spectacular shortened escape, which is also called the Sultan. In order to significantly bring the start of flowering, you need to put the pot in a bag filled with ripe apples. Fruits emit a gas (ethylene), and it contributes to the acceleration of flowering.

Diseases, pests, and possible problems

Begin to dry the tips of the leaves ― excessively low humidity. This plant loves moisture, so in the presence of such signs, it is necessary to increase the humidity in the room.

On the walls of the container and the ground, there was mold ― this is due to excessive watering in the winter. It is necessary to remove the mold with a napkin, watering to make more scarce.

On the leaves there are small bright spots ― this usually suggests that the pineapple settled pests such as false. To get rid of them, you need to process the leaves with a solution of potassium permanganate.

Rotted root system ― this happens when the pineapple is in a cool and too wet place. Experts recommend cutting the lower part of the trunk to healthy tissue, and the remaining top to root.

Pineapple grows very slowly ― this can be observed in the case when the plant is in a cool place (the temperature of the soil should also below). Put the plant in heat and water it with lukewarm water.

The infestation of harmful insects is very rare.
